Key West tourist dies after falling on a boat, police say

A 65-year-old tourist died Tuesday night after he fell and struck his head on the deck of a boat that was offshore Key West, police said.

Raymond Alan Hayes, of Richmond Hill, Georgia, was taken to the Lower Keys Medical Center on Stock Island where he was pronounced dead, according to Adam Linhardt, spokesman for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

After a two-month coronavirus shutdown, the Keys reopened to tourists on Monday.

Hayes had been standing on the bow of a Sunset Watersports boat out for a snorkel trip at Sand Key when he fell, police said.

A boat crew member ran to Hayes, who was reportedly still breathing but unresponsive, and the crew took him to shore from Sand Key, which is about seven miles off Key West.

Deputies responded to the Key West Historic Seaport, 201 William St., at about 7:30 p.m. and spoke with the crew member who found Hayes.

Hayes died at the hospital at 8:01 p.m.

Autopsy results are pending but police said the incident does not look suspicious.

“Foul play was not believed to be a factor in the incident,” Linhardt said.
