Couple raped woman who passed out in their Key West hotel room, police say
A Maryland couple was jailed Thursday after police said they raped a 23-year-old woman they invited back to their hotel room after a night of drinking in Key West in January.
Eleanora Kurban, 23, and Bryce Austin Summerlin, 28, both of Shady Side, Md., were each arrested on a felony charge of sexual assault for the alleged attack of the woman, who police said had passed out in their hotel room bed.
Summerlin faces two counts.
Both were booked into the Plantation Key jail early Thursday morning and released hours later.
Kurban posted a $50,000 bond while Summerlin posted $100,000.
Neither could be reached for comment Thursday through a phone number listed in the police report. A man who answered the phone hung up on a reporter asking for Summerlin.
The alleged victim, who is listed in the arrest report as a “non-resident,” told police she went to Viva Saloon, 903 Duval St., at 9 p.m. Jan. 24 to meet a friend for karaoke.
Instead, she said she met Kurban and Summerlin, danced with Kurban during some songs and had two drinks and a shot of tequila before walking with them to Bare Assets strip club, 1029 Truman Ave. At the club, Summerlin bought a private lap dance and the 23-year-old woman joined him in the room, according to the police report.
During the private dance, Summerlin tried to touch her breasts and kiss her, police reported.
At Bare Assets, she said the couple gave her a series of tequila shots although she hadn’t ordered any, the report states.
“When she would take a shot, another one would always just be there,” police wrote.
The three left when the club closed at 4 a.m. and the alleged victim said the couple talked her into going with them to their hotel room at Ibis Bay Resort, 3101 N. Roosevelt Blvd., to “sleep it off,” police said.
The 23-year-old woman had left her bicycle back at Viva Saloon and agreed to take an Uber to Ibis Bay, where she agreed to sleep in the room’s only bed with the couple, with Kurban in the middle.
She awoke to find both Kurban and Summerlin on top of her, police reported.
“There was no discussion prior to the sexual contact and she did not give them consent,” police wrote. “Due to her level of intoxication, she continued to ‘pass out’ and come to at various times during the incident.”
Kurban and Summerlin both forced oral sex on the alleged victim, police reported.
The alleged victim said she did yell out and told them that it hurt. She had told them both no, police said.
“She was too intoxicated to try to fight against them or try to leave,” police wrote. “But she told them no several times and told them it hurts and to stop.”
The 23-year-old woman worried she would get pregnant and Kurban had Summerlin send her some money for Plan B through the Venmo app, police said, and he paid for an Uber to take her to her bicycle.
At home, the woman’s girlfriend told her not to shower and to go to the emergency room. At the hospital, the police were called.
Kurban sent the woman a message on Snapchat that said, “I’m sorry,” and referred to the night before as “stupid,” police said.
