Manatee severely injured by boat propeller in the Keys
A manatee was severely injured when he was hit by a boat’s propeller in the Florida Keys Saturday.
The seven-and-a-half-foot male suffered at least two deep gashes from the vessel’s prop, said Mary Stella, with the Dolphin Research Center in Grassy Key.
The incident happened in a canal on Grassy Key, an island just north of the city of Marathon.
The manatee was removed from the water by the Dolphin Research Center’s Manatee Rescue Team and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
It was taken by truck to the Miami Seaquarium on Virginia Key for treatment and rehabilitation, Stella said.
