Seven Mile Bridge Run canceled because of coronavirus concerns

The annual Seven Mile Bridge Run, which attracts competitors from all over the world to the Florida Keys, is canceled because of concerns over the coronavirus, organizers announced Friday afternoon.

The decision to cancel the March 28 event was made at the recommendation of “government officials,” organizers said on the run’s Facebook page.

Last year, 1,500 people participated in the run on the iconic bridge, which connects the Middle Keys city of Marathon with Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys.

“This is not a decision that was taken lightly but feels like the most responsible one for our volunteers and runners alike,” the statement reads.

Organizers will not be refunding the racers’ $65 registration fee, but each registered runner is guaranteed a spot in the 2021 race, according to the statement. The event is tentatively scheduled for April 17, 2021.

Runners sign up online, and the run is so popular, it typically sells out minutes after registration opens.

Organizers already printed bibs, T-shirts and medals. Anyone who wants any of those items can send a self-addressed, stamped priority mail envelope to P.O. Box 500110, Marathon, FL 2205.
