Motorcycle crash briefly closes main road into Florida Keys

Traffic in and out of the Florida Keys was blocked Friday morning because of a motorcycle crash on U.S. 1.

Shortly before 10 a.m., medics were in the process of flying the driver to a mainland hospital, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

The motorcycle wrecked at mile marker 108 on the 18 Mile Stretch of U.S. 1 that leads from Florida City on the mainland to Key Largo. Details of the crash were not immediately available.

Around 10:45 a.m., police opened both lanes of the highway, but drivers should still expect delays while Florida Highway Patrol troopers investigate the crash.

While the Stretch was closed, police diverted traffic coming in and out of the Keys to Card Sound Road and County Road 905, a two lane road to the east of U.S. 1 that leads to the mainland in a more indirect route.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
