How GPS units stolen in Palm Beach ended up in the Keys
Florida Keys detectives have arrested a Pembroke Pines man who they say stole marine GPS systems to sell them for drug money.
Moses Castillo, 31, faces at least five counts of dealing in stolen property. He’s being held in Monroe County jail on a $47,000 bond after his arrest on Monday.
When Monroe sheriff’s detectives arrested him around 2 p.m., he told them that he knew he “f---ed up,” and that he was supporting his drug habit, Detective James Hager wrote in his report.
Castillo was arrested around 2 p.m. as he drove up to a Key Largo house where he arranged to meet a man to sell him two GPS units, according to the report.
That man already bought three units from Castillo days earlier for $4,500 after answering an ad on Craigslist, only to discover they were stolen when he registered the serial numbers with Garmin.
He then contacted the sheriff’s office, which recorded a phone call between the buyer and Castillo in which he agreed to sell another GPS.
After deputies arrested Castillo, they said he admitted to stealing eight other GPS units from boats in the Palm Beach area, Hager said. One of the units he was going to sell in Key Largo on Monday was reported stolen from a 40-foot yacht in Palm Beach Gardens on Feb. 5, according to Hager’s report.
