North Carolina man killed crossing Florida Keys highway

A North Carolina man died Friday night after a car hit him as he crossed U.S. 1 in Key Largo, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP said Philip Edward Cassidy, 70, was walking from the ocean side of the highway to the bay side at mile marker 102, and was hit by a 2014 Toyota Prius, heading south, as he walked off the median.

The driver, Penny May, of Centerville, Indiana, and her two passengers were not injured. There are no charges pending, and alcohol was not a factor in the crash, the FHP said.

The southbound lane of U.S. 1 was blocked for about 40 minutes while troopers investigated the crash.
