He passed a car in front of him, but he didn’t see the motorcyclist behind him

A Florida Keys man told police he did not see a motorcyclist approaching behind his car when he changed lanes to pass slower traffic in front of him on the Seven Mile Bridge Thursday afternoon.

The motorcyclist, Stephane Lambert, 24, of Quebec, Canada, hit the back of the car and was flown to Jackson South Medical Center in Kendall with serious injuries, according to a Florida Highway Patrol press release.

The front of his 2008 Harley-Davidson hit the back of a 2016 Kia Sol as both vehicles were passing slower traffic ahead in the southbound lane of the bridge, which connects the city of Marathon in the Middle Keys to Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys.

The crash happened shortly after 3 p.m. and backed up already-heavy holiday traffic in the island chain.

The driver of the Kia, John D’Agostino, 30, of Big Pine Key, told FHP troopers that he did not see Lambert, according to the release.

Lambert, who troopers say was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from his bike. His medical condition was not immediately available Friday morning.

D’Agostino, who could not be immediately reached for comment, faces a citation for improper passing, according to the FHP report.

The original story stated the front of the Kia hit the back of the motorcycle as both vehicles changed lanes. The motorcycle hit the back of the Kia.
