At least three injured in Florida Keys multiple-car crash

Several people were injured in a multiple-vehicle crash on U.S. 1 in the Florida Keys Monday afternoon.

One person was flown by Monroe County’s helicopter ambulance to a Miami-Dade County hospital, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. At least two other people were taken to mainland hospitals by Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue, said Adam Linhardt, spokesman for Monroe’s sheriff’s office.

The crash happened shortly after 3 p.m. in the southbound lane of the highway around mile marker 112, which is near the Miami-Dade County line on the 18 Mile Stretch that connects Key Largo to Florida City on the mainland.

Linhardt said initial reports indicate four cars were involved.

The highway was not shut down because of the crash, but it further slowed already-congested conditions on U.S. 1 due to heavy holiday traffic.
