Kite surfer blown into a house in the Florida Keys and found unconscious near water

A Canadian man is recovering in a Miami-Dade County hospital after he was blown into the side of a house while kite surfing in the Florida Keys.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies found Adam D. Myers, 49, from Toronto, unconscious about 100 feet from the waterline behind a house on Costa Bravo Drive in Islamorada about 3 p.m. Monday. Medics were already treating him.

Witnesses told deputies Myers’ kite dragged him from the water into the home’s sliding glass door.

“Witnesses said Myers was no more than five or six feet off the ground, but the kite was above the roof of the house,” Adam Linhardt, sheriff’s office spokesman, said.

The witnesses also said Myers was using new kite surfing equipment, according to the sheriff’s office.

Nancy Barnhardt, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Key West, said winds in the area Monday afternoon were between 20 and 30 mph.

The county’s Trauma Star medical helicopter flew Myers to a hospital in Miami-Dade County. His condition Tuesday was not immediately available, Linhardt said.
