Broward offers 5-day reprieve on costly traffic ticket surcharges

MIAMI HERALD STAFF

To help Broward drivers who may have been penalized because of unpaid felony and misdemeanor traffic tickets or court costs, the Broward County Clerk's Office will waive the 35 percent collection surcharge beginning Monday.

Dubbed Operation Green Light, the discount program will run through Friday.

“This is a way to save money for people who want to be diligent and pay their tickets,” said Broward's Clerk of Courts, Howard Forman.

Forman said that Broward, as well as many other counties, has a large stash of unpaid tickets. The surcharge is set by the state, but the counties can offer a grace period.

“We would rather people take care of their tickets and not let them linger," he said.

Tickets can be paid at any of the four courthouses and the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicle locations from 8 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Those locations are: Central Courthouse, 201 SE Sixth St. in Fort Lauderdale; West Satellite Courthouse, 100 N. Pine Island Rd. in Plantation; South Satellite Courthouse, 3550 Hollywood Blvd. in Hollywood; North Satellite Courthouse, 1600 W. Hillsboro Blvd. in Deerfield Beach; Lauderdale Lakes DHSMV, 3718 W Oakland Pk Blvd. in Lauderdale Lakes and Margate DHSMV, 1135 Banks Rd. in Margate.
