A train hit a woman standing next to a car her 18-year-old-year daughter had parked on the railroad track at East Copans Road and Dixie Highway Monday morning, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
The woman, 55-year-old Malita Hyppolite, was killed at 9:07 a.m., BSO said. The impact caused the 2015 Toyota Corolla to be pushed 76 feet southeast of the intersection.
The incident began when Marie Hyppolite, the daughter, drove the car onto the tracks. The car held four passengers — the mother, two daughters and a granddaughter.
A BSO deputy noted in the accident report that the railroad crossing’s normal signals of an approaching train — bells, lights, gate arm — worked and no other cars blocked the Toyota’s path off the tracks.

According to BSO, Malita, Marie, Renette Hyppolite, the other daughter, and Draya Hyppolite, the granddaughter who had been in a car seat, all got out of the Corolla. The latter three got off the tracks. Malita didn’t.
Cleanup and accident investigation closed East Copans Road in both directions for several hours.
