A deadly shooting captured through the view of pursuing police
"Shots fired!" "Shots fired!" a Hallandale Beach officer screams during a confrontation that left a car burglary suspect dead.
Dramatic video footage captured by a camera attached to one of the officer's hats shows the minute and 17 second showdown that left Michael Wilson Jr., 27, dead in the quiet Golden Isles neighborhood before dawn Sunday.
Police received a report at about 4 a.m. Sunday of two men peering in cars with flashlights.
The camera worn by officer Richard Icobelli shows three officers approaching a gray Toyota Corolla, giving commands for them to exit the car. The video then shows the car pulling out and heading directly toward an officer before crashing into bushes.
"It shows the officers giving verbal commands," Chief Dwayne Flournoy said. "Then you see the car go into reverse and pull out of the parking space and head in the direction of Officer [Corey] Clark. It shows that he had the right to use deadly force. In my opinion he was justified."
Wilson's partner in crime Tyler Shuman took off running. He was found about two hours later, several blocks away from the shooting. He now faces a murder charge.
The department began using body cameras in December.
