Broward deputies injured in West Park confrontation

The driver who, Broward Sheriff’s Office said, backed his trunk up into two deputies during Friday’s wee hours was on probation for previous drug convictions.

John Musso, 49, of Hallandale was booked into BSO main jail on two counts of aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer. In February, Musso began 30 months of probation for possession of oxycodone and possession of cocaine. His career rap sheet includes convictions for cocaine possession, heroin possession and fleeing and attempting to elude a law enforcement officer.

According to BSO, around 2:13 a.m. a deputy spotted a lone car parked in a strip mall parking lot. The deputy said he spotted Musso slumped over in the car with drug paraphernalia. He called for backup units.

At this point, the deputy said, Musso began to exit the parking lot onto Hallandale Beach Boulevard. He U-turned from west to east and was blocked by the two arriving units.

BSO said that as the three deputies approached the vehicle, Musso put the car in reverse, knocking down two deputies and hitting a patrol car. The third deputy shot at Musso’s car. He missed Musso, but either that or the collision shattered glass.

The deputies were sent to Hollywood Memorial Regional Hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries.

BSO says Musso admitted to doing drugs in the car before the first deputy spotted him. Investigation of the encounter shut down Hallandale Beach Boulevard from Northwest 42nd Avenue to 48th Avenue during the morning rush hour.
