A man who shot and killed another driver during a road rage incident may have done so in self-defense, the Broward Sheriff's Office said Monday.

The incident happened just after 6 p.m. Sunday shot in the 1300 block of Southwest 48th Avenue in unincorporated Central Broward near Fort Lauderdale.

On Monday, BSO said Jack Bellino, 28, and Don William Alvarez, 27, were heading in opposite directions when Bellino "may have accidentally swerved into Alvarez’s lane," BSO said in a release.

That's when Alvarez made a U-turn and followed Bellino, BSO said. At some point Bellino Shot Alvarez, who later died.

BSO said in a statement "homicide detectives said the statements provided by Bellino and Alvarez’s girlfriend were consistent with eyewitness accounts and her cell phone video that suggested the shooting was a result of self defense."

When the investigation is complete, the cases will be handed over to the State Attorney's Office to determine if charges will be filed.

Meanwhile, Alvarez’s mother Stacia Richards told Miami-Herald news partner CBS4 that she is struggling to understand how someone could take her son, a father of a 5-year-old girl.

“There are no words that can take away the pain that I feel. None. None. None,” she told the station. “There are no words to show how I feel.”
