Broward mom dies, teen son critical after SUV hits them on sidewalk

A Broward mother died Wednesday after an SUV hit her and her son earlier this week while they were on a Pompano Beach sidewalk.

Deborah Etienne, 55, of Pompano Beach was injured Monday morning with her teenage son, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Jameson, 14, remained in critical condition at Broward Health Medical Center.

The SUV’s driver, 27-year-old Joel Ross Hamlar of Pompano Beach, was released from the same hospital with minor injuries Monday. The accident remains under investigation.

The SUV driven by Hamlar was heading south on North Dixie Highway when it left the road near Northwest 56th Street, according to BSO. Mother and son were walking north on the sidewalk when the vehicle plowed through them and crashed into a utility pole.
