Fort Lauderdale cab driver arrested, charged with sexual battery, kidnapping

Fort Lauderdale police have arrested a Yellow Cab driver who is accused of sexually assaulted a female passenger, police said Wednesday.

Max Raphael, 29, of Lauderdale Lakes, was charged Tuesday with one count of kidnapping and one count of sexual battery. He was booked into Broward County’s Main Jail on $500,000 bond.

Raphael picked up the victim and her friend in the area of the 2400 block of East Sunrise Boulevard on Oct. 9 and drove them to an ATM at Northeast Third Avenue and First Street, acording to police.

When the victim’s friend got out to use the ATM, Raphael drove away with the victim. He then “forcefully removed” her from the cab in the area of Southeast Third Avenue and Fourth Street and sexually assaulted her, police said.

The victim reported the incident to police and was taken to the Nancy J. Cotterman Sexual Assault Treatment Center for medical evaluation.

Police on Tuesday received the DNA results from the rape kit and identified Raphael as the suspect.

The incident is under further investigation.
