A standoff that began after a woman told police that a man had battered her and took a child hostage inside a Hollywood home ended hours later when officers discovered he killed himself.
Hollywood police negotiators and members of the department’s SWAT team responded to a home at 7181 Taft St. after 9 a.m. Sunday after the woman showed up at police headquarters to report that she had been “involved in a domestic incident,” according to officer Meredith Elrich.
The woman, in her 30s, showed up with a child and said there was another child still in the home with the man.
Police officers went to the home — closing down the busy road — and were able to persuade the man to let the child go, Elrich said.

Police did not disclose the relationship between the man, woman and children, but neighbors said he was the husband of the woman and the father of the children.
For hours, negotiators tried to make contact with the man to no avail.
"Unfortunately the suspect chose to take his own life," Elrich said.
Police have not yet released the name of the man.
By about 1:30 p.m., SWAT members and officers began to leave. Taft Street, which was closed in both directions for several blocks, was reopened.
Neighbor Patti Hettler broke down in tears after hearing that the man killed himself. She said the couple were married and they had two kids.
"He was a good man," she said. "He was a good father."
