Small plane goes down in Northwest Broward
A Fort Lauderdale couple is hospitalized after their small plane crashed in the Everglades on Sunday morning.
Sonia and Kenneth McKenzie took off from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport and experienced trouble just before 11 a.m.
Once airborne they told investigators they had an oil pressure drop and sent a distress signal to the airport.
After making a hard landing the plane exploded in flames.
Kristin Patton was fishing close by and says she saw smoke and heard a pop.
“I drove over and went to the fence and shouted to see if everyone was okay, then I saw all the fire rescue trucks,” Patton said.
Sonia McKenzie, 50, is in Broward Health North in good condition.
Kenneth McKenzie, 52, an air industry executive, was transferred to Jackson Memorial Hospital because of extensive burns to his body. He is in stable condition.
The National Transportation Safety board will figure out what went wrong.
