Crews make major progress against Everglades fire in Broward, officials say
An Everglades brush fire in Broward County is nearly out.
As of Saturday morning, the fire — which sits near mile marker 40, just west of U.S. 27 — has burned 6,750 acres, but firefighters had it 90% contained as of late Saturday morning, according to the Florida Forest Service.
The fire started on Thursday and might have been caused by lightning, said Chris Fisher, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Miami.
Current wind patterns are helping keep smoke out of residential areas, but any storm could change the wind patterns, Fisher said.
This report will be updated.
