Crew member goes overboard, dies on cruise that departed from Fort Lauderdale
A Princess Cruises’ crew member who was on a ship that departed from Fort Lauderdale went overboard and died Monday, a spokesperson said.
The Regal Princess departed Saturday from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, and the crew member went overboard in waters off the coast of Cancún, according to a Princess Cruises spokesperson.
Maritime authorities and colleagues from Carnival Jubilee helped with search and rescue efforts, a spokesperson said, and the Regal Princess has since departed the waters off Cancún, with arrival in Belize scheduled for Tuesday.
Princess Cruises didn’t disclose what led to the crew member going overboard, or how and when their body was found. Their identity was also withheld.
The Regal Princess is expected to return to Fort Lauderdale on July 18 from its seven-day Caribbean sailing, a spokesperson said. The cruise line “is deeply saddened” by the incident, and grief support services are being offered to guests and crew members affected by the death.
No additional information was immediately available Monday afternoon.
