Smoke from a brush fire in Miami-Dade County prompted the Broward County Natural Resources Division to issue an air quality alert Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The alert remains in effect until noon. Miami-Dade County has not issued an air quality alert. This comes as parts of South Florida including Broward and Miami-Dade counties are under a heat advisory with “feels like” temperatures expected to feel up to 107 degrees.

“Air Quality is forecast to improve this afternoon as surface winds pick up and help disperse any leftover smoke near the surface,” the NWS Miami wrote on X.

The fire, dubbed “Quarry 2,” began Monday near Northwest 137th Avenue and 25th Street, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. Crews arrived to find large columns of smoke rising from the area.

Officials upgraded the response to a second and third alarm due to the need for additional resources. Tankers and water tender trucks were deployed, while Air Rescue North and Air Rescue South conducted water drops to help contain the blaze.

As a precaution, MDFR advises people with respiratory conditions to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure. Residents should keep windows and doors closed and set air conditioning systems in homes and vehicles to recirculate air.

As of Tuesday morning, the fire had burned approximately 600 acres and was 30% contained, according to the Florida Forest Service.
