Hiker killed in possible bear attack in Montana is from Fort Lauderdale: reports
A missing hiker was found dead after an apparent bear attack in Glacier National Park on Wednesday, according to the National Park Service. The body was that of a 33-year-old man from Fort Lauderdale, news reports say.
While the NPS has yet to publicly identify the man, saying on Thursday that it is withholding the identity of the victim until 72 hours after next-of-kin notification, multiple news outlets, including the Montana Free Press, reported that Anthony Pollio, 33, of Fort Lauderdale, was reported missing on Monday after he did not return from a hike on the west side of the park on Sunday.
The body was found by search-and-rescue crews around noon Wednesday 2.5 miles up Mt. Brown Trail about 50 feet off the trail in a densely wooded area with downed timber, according to the NPS.
“His injuries are consistent with those sustained by a bear encounter,” the NPS said in a statement.
A section of the trail has been temporarily closed while park staffers investigate the death and monitor wildlife activity. Visitors are asked to avoid closed trails and check the Trail Status Reports page for updates.
In Glacier National Park, the last fatal bear attack happened in 1998 in Two Medicine Valley, according to the NPS, and the most recent bear-related injury occurred in August 2025.
