One person has been hospitalized and roads were closed after a chemical leak at a Port Everglades cold-storage facility Tuesday morning, Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue said.

The incident occurred at a facility at 3205 Southeast 19th Street around 9:45 a.m., according to the BSO.

Battalion Chief Michael Kane, a Fire Rescue spokesman, said a preliminary investigation indicates a failure in a transmission pipe supplying refrigeration caused a leak of anydrous ammonia. Paramedics took one person to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale.

That person is reported to be in stable condition, Kane said.

Several roadways in the immediate area were temporarily closed, but no evacuations were ordered, Kane said.

There is no threat to the surrounding community, but Kane said authorities are asking people to avoid the area while firefighters deal with the situation.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
