One person was hospitalized and roads were closed for most of the day after a chemical leak at a Port Everglades cold-storage facility Tuesday morning, Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue said.

The incident occurred at a facility at 3205 Southeast 19th St. around 9:45 a.m., according to BSO. Firefighters didn’t clear the scene until around 6 p.m.

Battalion Chief Michael Kane, a Fire Rescue spokesman, said a preliminary investigation indicates a failure in a transmission pipe supplying refrigeration caused a leak of anhydrous ammonia. Paramedics took one person to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale.

That person is reported to be in stable condition, Kane said.

Several roadways in the immediate area were temporarily closed, but no evacuations were ordered, Kane said.

There is no threat to the surrounding community, Kane said. Hazardous materials teams secured the leak late in the afternoon, he said.

The operation also included personnel from Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue. That department released photographs of firefighters being scrubbed down to clean chemicals off their gear.

The cause of the leak remains under investigation.
