The Broward Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a car fled from police Friday and crashed into a Parkland canal, killing two men.

A man driving a 2025 BMW X1 fled from the Sunrise Police Department around 2:19 a.m, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

When he drove off at high speed in the area of Nob Hill Road and Loxahatchee Road, an officer lost sight of the car, BSO said. The officer then spotted the BMW in a canal on the north side of Loxahatchee Road.

Sunrise police officers arrested Anthony Davis, 26, of Plantation, a short time later, BSO said. Officers were unable to locate two other men inside the BMW, Jerome Turner and Kelby Broward-Richardson.

Later that evening, the BSO Dive Team found Turner, 32, and Broward-Richardson, 31, dead in the canal.

“Investigators say excessive speed is believed to be a contributing factor to this crash,” BSO said. “The investigation into the crash continues.”

It’s unclear what led to Sunrise police officers chasing the BMW or who the driver was. A spokesperson for the department didn’t immediately respond Sunday to a request for additional information.

Davis was being held Sunday at the Broward County main jail on charges of robbery by sudden snatching with a firearm or weapon and resisting an officer without violence, jail records show. He didn’t have an arrest affidavit or attorney listed yet.
