A man armed with a machete was shot and killed by deputies Thursday morning in Oakland Park, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Shortly before 7 a.m., deputies responded to a report of a suspicious person in the 300 block of Northeast 38th Street. When deputies arrived, they located the man armed with a machete.

The man ”aggressively attacked” deputies with the weapon, prompting deputies to open fire, though no deputies were injured, according to BSO.

Oakland Park Fire Rescue transported the man, identified as 39-year-old Deavon Ray McGauley, to Broward Health Medical Center, where he died.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting as is standard with all police-involved shootings.

Meanwhile, the Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide and Crime Scene units are examining the events that led up to the shooting, and the agency’s Internal Affairs unit is conducting an administrative review.

The two deputies who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigation, per protocol.
