Three Fort Lauderdale police officers shot at and killed a man after he fired a weapon at them Saturday, authorities say.

Around 12:30 p.m., officers were called to a disturbance in the 900 block of Chateau Park Drive, Police Chief Bill Schultz said. While investigating, an unidentified armed man approached the officers; he was not involved in the initial disturbance.

The man fired a gun while near the officers, prompting three of them to open fire that struck him, Schultz said.

The officers performed “life-saving efforts” while waiting for Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, which took him to Broward Health Medical Center. He died in the hospital.

No one else was injured.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, which is standard protocol when an officer fires a weapon.

The officers were placed on administrative leave with pay pending an internal review in accordance with Fort Lauderdale police policy, Schultz said.
