Nearly a month after a man was arrested for allegedly kidnapping and strangling a woman, a grand jury has decided he will face a murder charge for her death, authorities say.

On Thursday, a Broward County grand jury indicted Brandon McCray, 28, on a count of first-degree murder, two counts of sexual battery and one count of kidnapping. McCray had previously been arrested on Dec. 30 on similar charges but not for murder.

On the night of Dec. 26, a bystander called 911 to report finding 56-year-old Heather Asendorf’s body on Hollywood Beach near Cleveland Street, an arrest affidavit read.

After detectives discovered foul play was involved, the investigation led to McCray because he matched the description of a man seen in a picture carrying the woman to the sand, the affidavit read.

He and detectives spoke, but what was said was redacted from his affidavit.

McCray is being held at the Broward County Main Jail with no bond.
