BSO identifies men who drowned after fleeing deputies and crashing car into lake
The two men whose bodies were pulled out of a Broward County lake Tuesday after the car they were in crashed have been identified.
Weekenley Felix, 22, and Ashly Rozier, 20, died after being suspected of breaking into cars in Deerfield Beach, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Just before 4 a.m. Tuesday, 911 calls came in about a burglary in the 700 block of Deer Creek Emerald Way West in Deerfield Beach. Deputies say multiple people were burglarizing unoccupied parked cars in the area. Once BSO deputies arrived, the driver took off with two men in the car, BSO said.
The car crashed into a lake near Lakeside Way and Lakeside Drive—around half a mile away from where they were first spotted.
One man, Pledidson Jeansam Philibert, 21, was able to make his way out of the car and onto land. He was arrested and charged with five counts of burglary of unoccupied conveyance and three counts of conspire to commit burglary of an unoccupied conveyance.
One of the first responding deputies entered the water to try to rescue others from the car, but was unable to do so. BSO’s Dive Team, Aviation, K-9 and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue arrived and found the bodies of Felix and Rozier in the water.
It is unclear who was driving the car.
