Broward woman posed as caregiver to steal thousands, deputies say
A Deerfield Beach woman who preyed on older people and stole thousands of dollars from them has been arrested, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.
Detectives received a report in early October that an older man was being exploited by a woman posing as a caregiver at the B’nai B’rith apartments, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
The man let Jamisha Shamari Sylvain, 26, into his apartment, where she found his bank card and withdrew money from his account multiple times for a total of $1,600, according to the sheriff’s office.
Sylvain is accused of running a similar scam on several other vulnerable people, according to BSO.
“In some cases, she pretended to be a new caregiver assigned by the victim’s health insurance company,” BSO said in a statement. “While inside their apartments, she stole their debit cards and told them she needed their personal banking information.”
Sylvain was arrested Friday on four counts of elderly exploitation of less than $20,000, three counts of grand theft against a person 65 or old, two counts of occupied burglary, one count of criminal use of person identification information and one count of resisting an officer without violence, according to jail records. She is being held on a $103,000 bond at the Broward Main Jail.
There may be additional victims, BSO said. Investigators are asking those with information to call the sheriff’s office non-emergency line at 954-764-4357.
