Vest saves deputy who was in shootout with casino robber: BSO

A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy was shot while trying to apprehend an armed robber Thursday afternoon, with his bulletproof vest saving his life, authorities say.

The person who pulled the trigger was also shot. They were both rushed to a hospital.

Around 2:30 p.m., Carlos Robinson, 27, was involved in a robbery at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino near Hollywood, according to deputies. Seminole Police said Robinson grabbed cash out of the hand of a patron, according to Miami Herald news partner CBS News Miami. No one was hurt at the casino, WSVN-Fox 7 reported.

Seminole Police called for back-up when Robinson left their jurisdiction. BSO’s Burglary Apprehension Team and a police helicopter tracked him through North Lauderdale into Margate.

Robinson and deputies faced off in a residential neighborhood near the 6100 block of Northwest Second Street. Deputies ordered him out of his car and tried to “de-escalate the situation with less-lethal methods.”

According to deputies:

He didn’t comply and instead shot at them, striking a deputy from the BSO North Lauderdale District. His ballistic vest absorbed the impact, preventing a life-threatening injury.

Authorities returned fire, hitting Robinson. Margate Police’s SWAT team moved in and detained Robinson, the sheriff’s office said.

First responders gave medical aid to both men before taking them to a nearby hospital. The deputy was treated and released.

A resident in the neighborhood told reporters at the scene that her daughter noticed something was wrong moments before the shooting.

She looked through the back door at what her daughter was referring to and saw deputies near an open car door and someone standing nearby. News-helicopter footage shows a black car, surrounded by deputy vehicles, riddled with bullet holes in its side and back windows.

The next thing she heard was gunshots.

“I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is crazy, this is absolutely crazy.’ ... .I talked to deputies after and told them that if you have to take out one bad person to save others, I’m happy with that,” the unnamed mother told a reporter with Miami Herald news partner CBS News Miami.

The union representing Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies and sergeants stood behind their injured comrade.

“We are proud of our deputies who took appropriate action against an armed subject that attempted to take the lives of our members this evening,” said Dan Rakofsky, president of the Broward Deputy Sheriffs Association. “It is not acceptable to shoot at a law enforcement officer in Broward County. We are especially grateful that they are all safe tonight and wish the injured deputy a swift recovery.”

Robinson is facing charges that include attempted murder of a law-enforcement officer; shooting into an occupied dwelling; possession of a firearm by a convicted felon; and resisting arrest with violence. He also has an active warrant out of Palm Beach County; it’s unclear on what charges.

He was convicted of a burglary charge in 2023 and sentenced to probation, which he completed.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, per protocol. BSO is investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting, and its Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative review.

Six deputies fired their weapons and are on administrative assignment, as is policy when deputies are involved in shootings, as the investigation continues.
