A 12-year-old boy died in a house fire in Margate Thursday afternoon, city officials said.

Margate firefighters, along with crews from North Lauderdale, Coconut Creek and Coral Springs, began battling the blaze in the 5000 block of Southwest Sixth Street around 4:30 p.m., according to a statement from the city.

The fire was so intense that the home’s roof partially collapsed and the gear of one of the firefighters, including his pants and boots, caught fire, city officials said. He was not injured, they added.

Two adult relatives inside the home escaped, but when firefighters entered, , they found the boy had already died, according to the statement. Firefighters rescued a dog, but found another dog dead, city officials said.

One of the adults was hospitalized. His or her condition was not immediately available.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, the city said Friday. Officials have not publicly released the name of the boy.
