Armed man killed by Broward deputy after firing at officer inside home, BSO says
A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy shot and killed a man who the agency says was armed and holed up inside a house occupied by other people Sunday night.
Around 5:35 p.m., deputies were called to the house at the 2500 block of Northwest Ninth Court to respond to reports of an armed man walking around with children in the area, according to sheriff’s office spokeswoman Miranda Grossman.
Arriving deputies spotted Edward Jerrel Dolison, 37, and he ran inside the house armed with a handgun. There were several other people inside the home, too, Grossman noted.
Deputies set up a perimeter around the home and demanded Dolison come outside, the sheriff’s office said. He eventually exited the home holding a gun to his head before returning back inside. At this point, Grossman noted there was still one more person in the house with him.
A deputy then approached the front door, which was open, and saw Dolison holding the gun, per Grossman. Dolison fired the weapon, she said, and that’s when the deputy returned fire, striking him.
Other deputies subsequently rushed inside the home and saw Dolison on the ground lying lifeless, holding a gun, Grossman said. Deputies found two firearms in the house; one of which had its serial number scratched off, according to the sheriff’s office.
Grossman said the deputy who shot Dolison has been placed on administrative assignment pending further investigation.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the agency tasked with probing all police-involved shootings in the state, is investigating.
