A man who had just been held up at gunpoint outside a Dania Beach 7-Eleven convenience store shot the robber — then gunned down another man who tried to run him over with a car, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

Around 7 p.m., detectives say 19-year-old Justin Kessel robbed the man outside of the store at 800 Stirling Road and then walked inside to rob the clerk.

While Kessel was inside, the first victim grabbed a gun from his car. Once Kessel exited the store, detectives say he ran toward the man, who fired several shots and wounded him. The man, whom BSO did not identify, held Kessel at gunpoint waiting for deputies to arrive, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Gerdy St. Louis said.

But before officers could make it there, investigators say 40-year-old Melvin Presley, driving a 2025 Honda CR-V, tried to run the man over. The man jumped out of the way and fired more shots at the car, St. Louis said. Presley was shot multiple times. Deputies found him inside the car at the 100 block of Phippen Waiters Road, St. Louis said. Paramedics took Presley to Memorial Regional Hospital, where he died, St. Louis said.

Kessel was also taken to the hospital to be treated for his gunshot wounds. His condition was not immediately available.

As detectives continue to investigate the shootings, St. Louis said the man who shot Kessel and Presley was questioned and released. BSO detectives and the Broward State Attorney’s Office are working to determine if he will be charged.
