A man who shot himself Saturday afternoon in Cooper City was later shot at by a Broward Sheriff’s deputy who was sent to help him, authorities said. He later died from his injuries.

Around 12 p.m., a 911 call reported a man had shot himself near the 10200 block of Griffin Road, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue rushed over and found the unidentified injured man. It’s unclear where the man shot himself.

According to the sheriff’s office, a deputy approached the man to try to help him, and that’s when the man attacked the deputy, who then fired his gun. It’s unclear if the deputy shot him or missed.

Fire Rescue tried to save the man’s life, but he died at the scene.

As per protocol, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting. Broward Sheriff and Davie Fire Rescue took the man’s mother and a deputy to the hospital. Neither were injured by gunfire, the sheriff’s office said.
