A man was killed Sunday morning after a car hit him on Interstate 75 in Broward, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

lberto Valderrama, 70, was killed at around 6:20 a.m. when a 2013 white Freightliner semi truck struck him on I-75 southbound near Weston, FHP said. All lanes of that part of the highway were closed but have since been reopened.

Valderrama, per the agency, was sitting inside his car on the shoulder of I-75 when he exited his vehicle and walked into the center lane. Maikel Hernandez Serrano, the 46-year-old driver of the semi truck, swerved to avoid hitting Valderrama.

However, Serrano struck Valderrama, who died on the scene, according to FHP. Serrano was not injured and pulled over on the shoulder after the collision.

Traffic homicide troopers are investigating.
