A boy was hospitalized Thursday afternoon after being bitten while playing in the ocean surf in Fort Lauderdale, according to the city’s Fire Rescue department.

The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. around 1000 Seabreeze Boulevard, said Frank Guzman, spokesman for the Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue.

The fish bit the boy on his lower leg, Guzman said. Since no one saw the fish, Guzman said paramedics could not confirm initial reports that it was a barracuda.

Ocean Rescue lifeguards gave the boy first aid, and paramedics took him to Broward Health Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries, Guzman said.
