Motorcycle race in Broward turns deadly. 1 dead, 1 seriously injured, BSO says
A Hialeah man is dead and another man is in critical condition after crashing their motorcycles into each other while racing on U.S. Highway 27 in Weston, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.
Around 4:35 p.m. Sunday, the men were riding near the 4400 block of the highway when they collided “in a sideswipe type crash,” BSO spokeswoman Gerdy St. Louis said.
Mario Vasquez, 63, was riding a 2002 Honday CBR 600 F4 and 35-year-old Asiel Mena-Echevarria was on a 2019 Honda CBR 1000 RR, according to the sheriff’s office.
After hitting each other, the motorcycles fell to the road and slid several hundred feet, St. Louis said, adding Mena-Echevarria’s bike caught fire and ignited a large area of grass in the center median on fire.
Fire Rescue paramedics took the men to Broward Memorial Regional Hosptital, where Vasquez died from his injuries, St. Louis said. As of Monday night, Mena-Echevarria, who is also from Hialeah, remained in critical condition.
