A 4-year-old boy was hospitalized on Tuesday afternoon after he got hold of a gun and shot himself in the foot, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives say the boy was being cared for by a family member at a home near the 600 block of Northwest 27th Avenue in unincorporated Broward County.

No arrests have been made as BSO’s special victims unit continues to investigate.

“A firearm should always be unloaded and stored in a locked storage container that isn’t easily accessible to minors,” BSO spokesperson Gerdy St. Louis said in a statement to the Miami Herald. “Doing so protects children and adults by preventing unintentional shootings and incidents like this one.”

Authorities did not disclose the boy’s condition.
