2 victims pulled from Wilton Manors house fire, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue says
Fort Lauderdale firefighters rescued a man and woman from a burning home in Wilton Manors on Wednesday afternoon.
The blaze, at the 500 block of Northwest 21st Street, began around 1:30 p.m.
Both people had to be physically pulled from the house and were taken to Broward Health Medical Center, said Frank Guzman, spokesman for Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue.
The woman was then flown to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami to be treated for extreme burns, said Guzman.
The man’s condition was not immediately available, Guzman said, adding the relationship between the two was not immediately known.
Firefighters got to the home within four minutes of being called, he said.
After rescuing the people from the home, commanders at the scene determined the structure was unsafe for anyone to be inside, so firefighters evacuated and sprayed water on the exterior — which is known as a defensive attack, Guzman said.
Firefighters knocked down the flames and smoke within 45 minutes to an hour after they arrived, said Guzman.
The State Fire Marshal is the main agency investigating the cause of the fire, he said. However, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue’s Fire Marshal, as well as the Broward Sheriff’s Office and the Wilton Manors Police Department are also investigating, Guzman said.
