Firefighters battle blaze that badly burns two homes in Fort Lauderdale
Two homes were badly charred by flames and smoke in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday night, according to firefighters.
Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue firefighters began battling the blaze at the 3100 block of Northwest 69th Court shortly before 6 p.m., said department spokesman Frank Guzman.
In all, 11 people and two pets made it out of both homes safely, Guzman said. Though the fire left severe damage in its wake.
At one point, the smoke from the homes was so thick and tall that it could be seen by air traffic controllers at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport, about two miles away, Guzman said.
“It’s pretty fortunate no one was hurt,” he said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it started at one home and spread to the other, said Guzman. He noted that people in one house called the fire department to report a fire at the other before realizing their house was also ablaze.
Fourteen units from Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue fought the fire with the help from Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue, Guzman said.
