Broward Sheriff’s deputy deafened and beat a woman multiple times with belt: BSO
A Broward Sheriff’s detention deputy found himself behind bars after officials say he slapped and beat a woman multiple times with a belt, causing substantial injuries.
Around 7:20 a.m. Monday, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to a domestic disturbance in Dania Beach, where they found David Powell. He told authorities he and a woman had been in a “verbal altercation.”
When detectives spoke with the woman, they learned Powell, who served as a BSO deputy since December 2021, physically abused her. Per the investigation, Powell forcefully smacked the woman in the face and ear, deafening her.
He continued to beat her with a belt. The pummeling led to “significant injuries” and a trip to a local hospital to recover. Detectives also discovered that since March 2024, Powell physically abused the woman in past incidents.
Powell is facing three counts of aggravated battery, one count of felony battery and four counts of domestic battery. He was arrested and remains in the Broward County Main Jail as of Wednesday.
BSO said a risk protection order was completed on Powell, and deputies confiscated several of his firearms. He also was placed on administrative leave without pay.
“Domestic violence is never acceptable,” Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony said in a statement. “This is a serious issue that devastates the safety and well-being of individuals and families. Whenever anyone in this community, including employees of this agency, break the law, they will be held accountable for their actions. I want victims of domestic violence to know that they are not alone. If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, call 911 for help.”
