Staff at Broward school treated after pills found on campus, Miramar police say
Several staff members at a Broward County school complained of being light-headed and dizzy after a student was found with a bag of pills on campus Wednesday, Miramar police said.
The incident unfolded around 11 a.m. at the Whispering Pines Center, 3609 S. Douglas Rd., said Miramar police spokeswoman Janice McIntosh. The pills were unbroken, McIntosh said, indicating less of a risk of people being affected by their residue in the air.
A school resources officer assigned to the campus “secured the bag immediately and placed it in a safe location, separate from all students and staff, until the contents could be properly examined,” McIntosh said.
The staff members reporting adverse symptoms were treated at the school by Miramar Fire Rescue paramedics, according to McIntosh. A Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue Hazardous Materials unit “was requested to ensure a thorough and safe evaluation of the area,” McIntosh said.
“At this time, there is no confirmed threat to students or staff, and the situation remains under control,” McIntosh said in a statement. “The investigation is ongoing, and we will continue to work closely with our partners to determine the nature of the substance and ensure the continued safety of everyone on campus.”
Broward Public Schools spokesperson Cathleen Brennan said in a statement that in addition to four adults, two students were also evaluated by paramedics at the school, adding that no one was taken to the hospital.
“The student responsible will receive appropriate consequences. We defer to law enforcement for additional details,” Brennan said.
Police announced the school was clear to resume normal operations around 1:45 p.m., Brennan said.
Whispering Pines Center is an alternative education public school, with a current enrollment of just under 200 students, according to the school’s website.
