Father caught Broward high school coach sexual assaulting his daughter, deputies say
A 17-year-old’s father caught a Broward County high school basketball coach having sex with his daughter early Friday, deputies said. The harrowing discovery led to deputies uncovering that he had groomed and sexually abused the teen girl for months.
Around 4:50 a.m., a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy rushed to a Weston neighborhood to a 911 call from a father who told dispatch he found his 17-year-old daughter in the back of Dequan Andre Sierra’s blue minivan doing “something sexual,” an arrest report read.
As deputies detained Sierra, the girl told authorities that the 28-year-old basketball coach had sex with her. She also noted he called her many times that day requesting to see her and he sounded drunk. The teen then detailed how they met.
A 12th grader at Nova High School, Sierra was her gym teacher this school year, she told deputies. The two started texting each other around September or October. During the winter break, Sierra visited her in the early morning hours in her neighborhood, the report read.
Sierra sexually abused her about 15 times during the school break, and continued to sexually abuse her 8 more times in the months that followed, per the report.
He was charged with one count of an authority figure soliciting and engaging in sexual conduct with a student and one count of sexual assault. As of Tuesday, he was released from the Broward Main Jail on a $50,000 bond, court records show.
Broward County Public Schools said Sierra was reassigned away from the school and any students pending the outcome of the investigation. If the allegations are substantiated, he will be fired, officials said.
“BCPS is deeply disturbed by the allegations and remains committed to ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all students,” the school district said.
