Fort Lauderdale firefighters save dogs from house fire, department says
Firefighters pulled four dogs from a smoldering Fort Lauderdale home that was in flames just minutes earlier Thursday morning, according to the department.
Firefighters arrived at the home in the 3000 block of Southwest Sixth Street in the Melrose Park subdivision shortly after 10 a.m. to find heavy smoke coming from the side of the house, said Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue spokesman Frank Guzman.
The only person home at the time was able to safely escape, holding a crate carrying two of his pet dogs, Guzman said.
But, he told firefighters four of his other dogs were still inside. After firefighters knocked back the flames in about 20 minutes, they went inside to rescue the pets, Guzman said.
“One by one, they were brought out and life-saving measures were started,” he said.
Paramedics took two of the dogs to an emergency animal hospital. One is healthy and back with its owner. However, one did not survive, Guzman said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but firefighters believe it started in a bedroom, Guzman said.
