Man guns down fiancé of the mother of his daughter outside Broward home, deputies say
A woman frantically called 911 after her son gunned down the fiancé of his child’s mother in the driveway of a Broward home last week, according to law enforcement officials. He was promptly caught after running away.
Calvin Dials, 22, knew the mother of his 18-month-old daughter would be arriving from Tampa that Friday afternoon with her fiancee, 33-year-old Alexander Davis, and her other young little girl, a Broward Sheriff’s Office arrest warrant read.
Around 1:40 p.m., Dials’ mother went out to greet the group as they pulled into the drive-away of the home, in the 200 block of Northeast 35th Street in Oakland Park, in a black Ford F-150. Davis stayed in the truck.
The grandmother lifted her toddler granddaughter and walked to the front door with the other child in tow, the warrant read. From the door, she noticed that Dials was wearing all black clothes and was “visibly upset,” aggressively walking toward her.
She pleaded for him to stay inside and calm down, but he did not. He yelled, “Where this n***** at.”
The mother of the young girls also began pleading for him not to start any fights as she stepped between him and the truck, where Davis was still sitting.
Dials promptly “violently moved” her and tapped on the truck’s window, demanding Davis come out, the warrant read. After he saw his fiancee pushed aside, he hopped out of the truck and asked, “What is your problem?”
Dials pulled out a gun from the front of his waist and pointed it at Davis, who immediately turned and moved back toward the truck, the warrant read. Dials proceeded to shoot him three times in the back.
Dials’ mother had already ran into the home with the young children and called 911. The mother of the two young children tried to check on Davis — but Dials followed behind, yelling, “Y’all motherf*****’s think this is a game.”
She began running away from the home, with Dials in tow, screaming for help, the warrant read. He eventually stopped following, went back to the house, grabbed a backpack and ran away.
Broward Sheriff’s deputies raced to the home after the 911 call of a shooting and found Davis lying in a pool of his own blood. He was then3 taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
The same day of the shooting, detectives canvassed the area and found Dials — promptly arresting him. Dials told detectives that he wanted to go outside and fight Davis, but brought a gun because he didn’t know if he was armed, the warrant read.
He went on to claim that he shot Davis in self-defense because he did not know if he was going to get a weapon when he turned his back to Dials after he pulled out a gun.
When authorities later searched the pick-up truck, a gun was found in a backpack below the driver’s seat.
As of Wednesday, Dials remained in the Broward County Jail, facing charges of first-degree murder with a firearm, battery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
