Broward deputies shoot man who was armed with a knife and throwing rocks at cars: BSO
Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies shot and seriously wounded a man they say was armed with a knife and throwing rocks at passing cars in Oakland Park on Sunday evening.
Paramedics transported 39-year-old Jarcara Mansfield to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where the sheriff’s office said he remained in critical condition as of late Monday.
Deputies, including tactical team members, and Oakland Park Fire Rescue paramedics arrived at the 500 block of East Oakland Park Boulevard shortly before 6 p.m. after people called 911 to report a man waiving a knife at pedestrians and traffic while also hurling large rocks at cars, said Gerdy St. Louis, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman.
As deputies tried to negotiate with Mansfield, he refused to drop the knife, continued “acting erratically” and shouted at the deputies to kill him, St. Louis said. The deputies first tried to subdue him with “less than lethal weapons,” St. Louis said.
When he still did not drop the knife, two deputies — “fearing for their safety and the safety of others around them” — shot Mansfield multiple times,” St. Louis said.
“After securing the suspect, the deputies on scene immediately rendered medical aid until Oakland Park Fire Rescue arrived on the scene,” St. Louis said.
Agents with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are investigating the shooting, and the sheriff’s office “is investigating Mansfield’s criminal actions,” St. Louis said. He faces one count of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and one count of resisting arrest with violence.
The two deputies who shot Mansfield have been placed on administrative assignment pending further investigation, as is the department’s policy with shootings, St. Louis said.
