A Fort Lauderdale officer, while off-duty, shot a man Wednesday night who allegedly had a gun, police say. He’s been suspended, as is department protocol.

Sometime around 6:30 p.m., Fort Lauderdale police said Lt. Jonathan Bohm was directly called by a property manager who alerted him that a man, later identified as 49-year-old Damian Orozco, was causing a disturbance at 2323 State Road 84, near Yacht Haven Park & Marina.

No 911 call was placed, but Bohm showed up to the property in his unmarked police car with his emergency lights on — and also requested assistance over dispatch.

“Send me some District 3 units, let me get a couple of them to Yacht Haven...got a disruptive subject threatening to attack the manager...,” Bohm said on a dispatch call. The dispatcher immediately dispatched several police units to the property.

Bohm went on to tell the dispatcher that Orozco said he had a shotgun but that it wasn’t on him. The dispatcher sent more police officers to the property as Orozco “may have a shotgun.”

Police said Bohm confronted him. Sometime during the encounter, he shot Orozco.

“Suspect down,” Bohm said. “I’m not hit, but please get someone here quick. Suspect is down.”

Officers performed life-saving measures until Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue took Orozco to Broward Health Medical Center. He later died at the hospital.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.

The officer will be placed on administrative leave with pay pending the results of the FDLE and an Internal Affairs investigations, police added.
