Weeks after two people were found dead in the landing gear compartment of a JetBlue aircraft at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, investigators have traveled to the Dominican Republic to meet with local authorities and possible family members to identify the deceased, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

BSO detectives are working with Dominican investigators and the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office to confirm the pairs’ identities and determine how they ended up in the plane’s undercarriage.

Grim discovery

On Jan. 6, deputies from the Airport District responded to a call around 11:30 p.m. Paramedics from Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue also arrived on the scene, where both individuals were pronounced dead, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

The bodies were found during a routine post-flight maintenance inspection, per JetBlue. The plane had flown in from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City as flight 1801.

The JetBlue plane in which the pair were found on had previously flown to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic the day before they were found, according to Flight Radar 24.
