Child protective services investigating after Davie dad accidentally shoots daughter

Broward's Child Protective Investigations Section was investigating Monday after a father trying to teach his daughter about gun safety shot her in the arm Sunday night, according to Florida Department of Children and Families spokeswoman Paige Patterson-Hughes.

The incident happened at about 7:45 p.m. on the 7700 block of Northwest 34th Street.

Davie Police spokesman Sgt. Pablo Casteneda said Monday that the department will continue to investigate as child protective investigators also look into the case.

The 12-year-old girl was hit in the left forearm as her dad showed her the gun.

"Whenever you are teaching someone about gun safety, you have to make sure the weapon is not loaded," Casteneda said.

He said the girl was treated at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital and was expected to recover.
